5 Signs Your Cat Is Happy and Healthy

5 Signs Your Cat Is Happy and Healthy

April 20, 2026·4 min read

Cats are masters of subtlety. They won't run to the door wagging their tail when you come home (well, some might). But they have their own beautiful ways of showing they're happy.

1. The Slow Blink — When your cat looks at you and slowly closes their eyes, they're telling you they trust you completely. It's the cat equivalent of saying 'I love you.' Try slow blinking back — you might just start a conversation.

2. Purring — This is the most obvious one, but it's worth mentioning. A cat who purrs while sitting on your lap or next to you is content. Some cats even purr while eating, which is the ultimate sign of satisfaction.

3. Kneading — When your cat pushes their paws in and out against a soft surface (or your leg), they're reliving the comfort of nursing as a kitten. It's a sign of deep comfort and trust.

4. Showing Their Belly — A cat who rolls over and shows their belly is incredibly vulnerable. This doesn't necessarily mean they want belly rubs (that's a trap some cats set), but it does mean they feel safe around you.

5. The Upright Tail — A cat walking toward you with their tail straight up is greeting you with joy. It's the feline equivalent of a smile. If the tip of the tail quivers, they're especially excited to see you.

Understanding your cat's happiness signals helps you be a better cat parent — and a better cat sitter. On CatChat, we believe the best cat care comes from people who truly understand cats. That's why our community members can earn a 'Cat Approved' badge by passing our cat behaviour quiz.
